Drew Finley Shares His Experience In The MPA Program.

Q: How long have you been in the MPA Program and what is your concentration?

A: I am currently in my second semester of the MPA program. My concentration is Town, City and County Management.

Q: What are your career goals, and how has the MPA program helped you to progress towards your goals?

A: My professional objective is to serve in a management capacity in North Carolina local government. After completing my undergraduate degree at Wake Forest, I worked full-time for the City of Hendersonville for two years through the Lead for North Carolina program. I had not considered a local government career while I was in college, but I fell in love with the work right away. Local government is one of the best careers for those who want to make a direct and positive impact in their communities.

Appalachian’s MPA program is distinguished for its focus on equipping students with the practical knowledge they need to be effective public sector leaders, and that is why I enrolled. From my coursework, I have gained considerable knowledge about what it means to be a public administrator and how we might best serve citizens. I have learned about emerging issues in the field as well as the complex challenges facing local government managers in today’s dynamic workplace environment. All of this information will be invaluable for me in my career. The program has also greatly expanded my professional network, as I have connected with local government leaders from across the state through course assignments, guest speakers, and conferences.

Q: What advice would you give to a prospective student about the App State MPA program?

A: Enroll in this program if you have a passion for public service and want to make a difference in your community. Also, enroll in this program if you are attracted to a practical, hands-on degree that will prepare you for a career in the public sector.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote that is meaningful to you?

A: “Not for ourselves alone are we born. Our country, our friends, have a share in us.”

On Duties, Cicero

This quote reminds me that we should always strive to contribute to the greater good of our community and not merely focus on our own interests.
