Katelyn McKinney shares how App State's MPA program is preparing her for a career in public service

My journey toward a career in public service began with a deep interest in the challenges and opportunities facing cities and counties, which led me to pursue a master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in public management. Building on my bachelor’s degree in political science at App State, my studies have provided me with a solid foundation in governance and policy-making. I am particularly passionate about finding innovative solutions that promote effective governance and sustainable growth. My ultimate career goal is to contribute to the local government sector or work in a related role within the private sector, helping communities thrive by improving quality of life and managing resources more efficiently.

My interest in public administration is rooted in my academic experiences at Appalachian State, where I have gained both a solid theoretical foundation and practical insights into local government operations. Through coursework in the MPA program, I have studied topics like urban development, public policy, budget management, and the fiscal challenges municipalities face. In addition to my studies, my internships have been crucial in shaping my career path. During my time with the City of Reidsville, North Carolina, I worked alongside the Planning and Community Development Manager on various GIS projects and planning initiatives. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my critical thinking skills to real-world challenges and gain a deeper understanding of how ordinances and planning regulations guide a city’s growth and development. Additionally, I am currently an intern with WithersRavenel, a civil and environmental engineering firm, where I gain valuable exposure to the intersection of public and private sector work. I assist with funding opportunities, financial monitoring, and compliance for public projects, which broadened my perspective on the critical role private firms play in urban development and infrastructure projects.

As I continue my MPA studies, I am focused on developing the leadership, analytical, and technical skills necessary to excel in public administration. The knowledge and skills I am gaining through my MPA program will equip me to contribute to the effective management of cities and counties, develop sustainable urban policies, and foster collaboration between the public and private sectors. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and the chance to make a lasting impact in the field of public administration.
