Brittany PruittWhat contributed to your decision to pursue an MPA degree?

After working in the nonprofit sector for about five years I discovered my passion was to become an Executive Director of a nonprofit organization. I knew that pursuing an MPA degree would prepare me with the skills necessary to put myself in a position to become an Executive Director. I also felt like an MPA degree would be beneficial if I decided to work in the public or private sector later on in my career.

Can you tell me about your career path and current position?

I graduated from Appalachian State with my undergrad in Social Work and started working at Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I started as a Case Manager and was eventually promoted to Director of Programs. After eight years at Big Brothers Big Sisters and upon completing my MPA and MBA I became the President of United Way of Davidson County. I have been in my current position for almost four years.

In what ways has the App State MPA program helped you?

The App State MPA program has helped me in various ways. First of all, the program introduced me to the amazing individuals in my cohort that became family. The relationships developed through the program have been instrumental in having a sounding board to go to for advice long after we graduated. Secondly, the courses provided a strong foundation of knowledge that gave me the confidence and ability to lead a nonprofit organization. Lastly, the program also provided a knowledge base that transcends across the private and public sector. This really provides an endless number of opportunities for future growth and professional development.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to individuals considering the App State MPA program?

Do it! It was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made. The time, energy, and effort put into the program will definitely pay off in the long run. There is also an amazing group of Alumni that are willing to help and support you once you have completed the program.
